Scoliosis - Chiropractic Care Can Help

Chiropractics

People get chiropractic treatments for lots of reasons, but one of them is to try and manage scoliosis: this is called scoliosis chiropractic. If you are looking for a chiropractor to deal with scoliosis, it is probably because you have been recommended by your physician to begin going through chiropractic therapy for your own scoliosis, or because a family and friend is going through the pain and problems that are associated with the disease. If so, you should start thinking about how to find a chiropractor to start giving you scoliosis chiropractic therapy.

Scoliosis Chiropractic

Scoliosis is a medical condition that is somewhat common and that affects about seven million people in the United States. Scoliosis causes an individual’s spine to twist or curve from side to side in an abnormal way. If the spine is curved in this way, the deformity expands front to back and left to right. However, it is common that with a case of scoliosis, when viewed on an x-ray, the deformity looks like a C or an S (instead of a normal straight line up and down). This is either caused by problems that were present at birth and thus named a congenital condition, or it is from an unknown cause, and thus called idiopathic. Some scoliosis cases are actually neuromuscular, such that they are a symptom of a greater problem like spinal muscular atrophy, cerebral palsy, or spina bifida. Sometimes, this bend in the spine is a result of an injury or other physical trauma.

If you have scoliosis, you may have difficulty moving, walking, doing low intensity work, sitting for extended periods of time, and getting through the activities of your everyday life without taking very strong pain medication. Other therapies may have failed for you, so you may be thinking about a more holistic treatment. Scoliosis chiropractic might be the best answer for you.

Although the practice is growing in popularity every year, not everybody is aware of the type of help a chiropractor can provide. Your general health practitioner might be able to help you decide if it is right for your particular condition of scoliosis. In order to get the most effective scoliosis treatment from a chiropractor, look for one that is specialized in treating individuals with scoliosis.

Your chiropractor can take x-rays to identify areas in the spine that are out of alignment. These are called subluxations. Using concentrated pressure and force, your doctor can correct these subluxations. This can relieve pressure on the spine and nerves, and in some cases, can help to reshape the spine slightly and alleviate or cure the pain associated with scoliosis.

Before undergoing scoliosis chiropractic treatment, consult with a physician about your condition; you will also want to make sure your chiropractor is experienced and that you fully understand the treatment plan.
