A good SAT prep program is an important step in getting ready to take this important standardized test. Studies have shown that the more time you put into studying and familiarizing yourself with the structure and layout of the test, the better the results. Fortunately, there are plenty of study materials out there, as well as classes aimed at getting you prepared for test day. But it’s important that you use your prep time wisely and focus your studies on what will best help you to succeed. Here are some great tips for getting the most out of your SAT prep work.

  • Familiarize yourself with the test: The better you understand how the SAT test is structured, the more time you’ll have to spend answering questions rather than struggling to orient yourself. Be sure you understand all directions ahead of time so you don’t have to waste time during the actual test reading them. You should also go into the exam already understanding the types of questions that will be asked. Spending time on practice materials and exams will help familiarize you with all this ahead of time.
  • Practice, practice: One of the best tips for SAT prep is to simply practice. There are plenty of preparation materials out there that can explain the different aspects of the test and give you ample opportunity to use what you’ve learned. Find practice tests that use actual questions from previous versions of the exam, as this will give you the best idea of what the real exam will be like. Then narrow down what areas are easiest for you and where you could use a little help. This way, you can spend extra time studying and practicing questions in your weakest subject area.
  • Take your practice tests seriously. Practice tests are instrumental in any SAT preparation program, as they can be great indicators of how you will actually perform on test day. But to take full advantage of this, you need to get serious when you take these tests and simulate the actual test-taking environment as closely as you can. Turn off that cell phone and put a "do not disturb" sign on the door. Eliminate any music, snacks, or bathroom breaks as well. When you sit through a practice exam in this manner, you can really get a good idea of how you’ll manage at the actual test.
  • Develop good time management skills. One of the greatest keys to success on the SAT exam is good time management, and thus, you should keep this in mind during your test preparation. Here you can develop strategies as to how to use the process of elimination, pinpoint deliberately deceptive or misleading questions, and focus the time you have on getting the most correct answers possible.
