Fishing for Salmon

Fishing

Salmon, along with trout, is one of the world’s great game fish. Found in many locations throughout the world, these prized creatures are the source of great pride for the anglers of all ages.

Getting started with salmon fishing

Fishing for salmon involves having the right equipment. Because salmon is found in both fresh and saltwater, it is important to have equipment that is specifically designed for each environment. Using the wrong equipment can be disastrous.

A good sporting goods store or fishing tackle supplier will have equipment designed specifically for salmon fishing. Salmon are large, aggressive fish known for their fighting ability and having tackle not up to the task is a disaster waiting to happen. Lost equipment, lost money, and lost fish are bound to follow.

Salmon fishing basics

The basic tackle for salmon fishing includes rods, reels, swivels, weights, and salmon fishing line and leaders. These are fundamental regardless of the location or the technique used. Salmon fishing line ranges from monofilament for trolling in clear water. For casting, a good brand of braided line is best. If you are not familiar with the product, ask those in the know. If your lines breaks, you are out a chunk of change as well as the fish.

Saltwater salmon fishing

Fishing in saltwater places demands on equipment that is not found in freshwater fishing. When selecting tackle, make sure it is made of non-corrosive materials and rated for saltwater. While the negative effects may not be immediate, saltwater will take a long-term toll.

In addition, you will need terminal tackle that will get your line down to the level that you need, but will shed kelp. The bait and lures you use should resemble the small fish that salmon feed on. Insects are not effective.

Fishing for salmon in freshwater

The biggest challenge in freshwater salmon fishing is in finding the right bait or lure. Live bait, floats, and flies all have their levels of effectiveness, depending on the time of year. The skill comes in being able to control the bait and make it look like something the fish would like. Through constant practice anyone can master the fundamentals.

Salmon fishing trips

Many travel agencies offer salmon fishing excursions. The costs can be quite reasonable and should include airfare, ground transportation, guides, and equipment.
