The roll-off rental is a booming business these days. As consumption reaches an all-time high in the United States, it’s not just restaurants and strip malls that need a dumpster. Increasingly, homeowners are using dumpsters for remodeling and construction projects as well as to assist in cleaning or moving. Here are some differences between the business and residential uses of dumpsters.

Roll-Off Rental for Business

From restaurants to shopping centers, rolloffs help businesses be rid of their waste on a regular basis. The transaction usually begins when a business calls a dumpster service and sets up regular pick-up. Depending on how fast the dumpsters are filled up, this schedule may be adjusted. Since there are multiple pickups, it is possible that the cumulative price means a lower price per pickup than the onetime users discussed in the next section.

Roll-Off Rental for Residential

Homeowners may find themselves in a number of situations where they need dumpster service. Here are the most common scenarios:

Remodeling and/or Construction

You’re remodeling your home or building an addition. The project could last a few days or several weeks. Depending on the amount of waste and the duration of the project, you may require one pick-up or multiple ones. Commonly disposed items include wood, brick and other building materials, although many may be flagged as hazardous and require special treatment.

Clean-Up and/or Moving

This project typically requires only one pick-up. Items typically consist of unwanted items such as clothes, food, home supplies, furniture, appliances, electronics and paper. The load could be lessened through recycling, donations and junk hauling services, which could mean you may need a smaller dumpster. There are even “bagsters” that are 3 cubic yards and hold up to 3,000 pounds of waste. At $150 as of 2010, you can save hundreds of dollars by using a bagster over a dumpster.

Roll-Off Rental: Considerations

Shop around before settling on a dumpster company. Find out about all fees involved before signing up for service.
Beware of surcharges and penalties that may include excessive weight, throwing away the wrong items, keeping the dumpster too long or damaging the dumpster.
