Roll-off dumpsters are simply a necessity in some situations. Driving your own truckloads to a garbage pick-up spot is not an option in some situations – including home remodeling, moving and home clean-up – and with the gas and labor involved it may be a better choice to use dumpster service. However, it is important to learn how the system works before you jump in headfirst.

Roll-Off Dumpsters: The Container

Dumpsters range in size from 20 to 40 cubic yards and can hold up to 6 tons. Fees start from $500 and can reach more than $700 for the largest containers. Getting on the phone, talking with a customer service representative and thoroughly describing your project is the best way to ensure that you find the right dumpster size for your project. You will learn why in the next section on fees.

Roll-Off Dumpsters: The Fees

If you overload your dumpster and it exceeds the weight limit, you will be charged extra. Other fees incurred during dumpster service include every visit a worker makes to pick up your trash, as well as possible drop-off fees. Also consider penalties for renting the container for too long or damaging it. Be sure to use wooden planks to secure your dumpster, as the companies typically aren’t liable for any cement damage.

Roll-Off Dumpsters: Other Considerations

  • Don’t put items in the dumpster that aren’t allowed. These may include hazardous waste, certain electronics and appliances, car parts, tires, batteries and light bulbs. These items often require special treatment for land, water and air quality. Breaking the rules can cause penalties, and it is likely the cost will travel to you.
  • Don’t assume dumpster pick-up will occur as soon as you need it. Companies typically require advance notice for a pick-up to occur. A rush order may not be possible, and if it is, it will likely be another extra fee.
  • In times of economic crisis, or when gas prices are on the rise, dumpster companies may be forced to increase their transportation and/or worker fees. Don’t just assume the company is scalping, but always practice common sense when using a company.
