Important Considerations in Residential Home Wiring

Residential home wiring is the wiring inside of your house. Usually, the residential home wiring you have done is not something you see- it is behind walls, in your attic, under your floor boards and in your ceiling. The only visible sign of your residential home wiring is the electrical outlets, light fixtures, and lights on your walls. Your air conditioner, your heating system in some cases, your hot water heater, and all of your other appliances also make use of this residential home wiring to provide them with the power that makes them go. Because of the importance of residential home wiring, there are several considerations associated with wiring your home.
Considerations in Residential Home Wiring
If you are building a new home, the most important consideration is whether your home will have a power hookup. You will need to contact your township about connecting to public power lines and you will need to find out who is the electricity provider in your area and find out about what is required to make the connection and turn your electricity on. If you are buying in a development or approved building lot, these permissions are likely already in existence. If you are buying on a scattered lot, you or your builder may need to take care of all of these factors before you can begin the build.
Once you have the permission to connect to power lines, you will need a residential home wiring diagram. This diagram will show how and where everything goes, from the light fixtures to the outlets. Think about how you will use your home and make sure that there are outlets everywhere you want to plug things in and lights everywhere that need lighting.
You also need to determine who will install your wiring. Residential home wiring is rarely a do-it-yourself job since there are a number of building codes to comply with and since there are a number of dangers inherent in electrical wiring, both in the initial installation and later when you plug things in and use the wiring to power items in your home. You should always use a licensed electrician, and you should understand there are different levels of licensing from master electrician to journeyman to electrical apprentice. Make sure you hire the most experienced electrician you can find to ensure your wiring complies with all building codes and that no fire starts because of faulty wires. If you are working with a builder to build your home, he may have an electrician working with him already who is an expert in residential home wiring. Otherwise, ask for licenses and references before hiring anyone to complete your residential home wiring project.
