Picking a Private Kindergarten

Preschools and Kindergartens

If you want your child to attend a private kindergarten, you need to know as much about the school as possible before you make your choice. Here are some ways to weed out schools that aren't right for your child, until you find the perfect fit.

  • Check the school website. The site can give you basic information, such as what the school offers, but it can tell you a lot about how the school runs, too. Is the website updated and current? Is there information about the teachers, the staff, and any after school programs?
  • School location. Is the school close by, and will it be easy to get your child there every day? Can your child walk to school, or is it on your way to work? Think about taking your child to school every day for years before you choose a school all the way across town.
  • Fees and tuition. A good school will post their fees on their website. You should find out about additional fees that might not be listed on the website, and ask about payment options or financial aid, if it's appropriate.
  • Other programs. Does the school offer after school or other programs if you need them? Do they offer homework help for older students? If they have an after school program, check and see if it's flexible, allowing your child to drop in if they need to, rather than sign up for a regular program. Are there extra fees for the after school program? Check to see what kind of classes and activities they offer in these programs, too.
  • Teacher info. Look for teacher bios that offer information on the experience and training of the school's teachers. Also ask how long teachers have been working at the school. If they have a high turnover, it could mean that teachers aren't happy with their pay, or they don't like the administration, and that could lead to troubles in the classroom, as well.
  • Visit the school. A good time to visit is in the morning when parents are dropping off their children. Pay attention to how the children react to the beginning of the day. Are they happy and excited to be there, or are they subdued and unhappy? This can give you an idea about the mood of the school and if children enjoy it or not.
  • Make sure the school is licensed and accredited. Always choose a school that is licensed as a school in your state, and is accredited. If you don't choose an accredited school, your child's classes may not count if they want to transfer to a public school. Picking the right private kindergarten can lead to a lifetime of strong learning skills for your child.
