Plastic surgery is a term used to describe reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery can improve function to areas of the body by correcting abnormalities caused by developmental problems, injuries, infections, tumors, or diseases. It is also used to give or restore a normal appearance. Cosmetic surgery is performed by reshaping functioning parts of the body to improve appearance.

Though there is no guarantee of perfection in form or function, reconstructive surgery has advanced beyond expectation in the last ten years. Reconstructive surgery can vastly improve a patient's bodily functioning and self-esteem for simple or complex problems. Reconstructive procedures help correct congenital abnormalities such as cleft-lip and palate deformities, breast abnormalities, and webbed fingers. Acquired deformities like burns, lacerations, and tumors may also be corrected by reconstructive plastic surgery.

Cosmetic plastic surgery is often sought by individuals who want to look and feel the best they can. It can help diminish the signs of aging, damage from the sun, and refine features to give balance and pleasing proportion to the face and body. Some types of cosmetic plastic surgery include botox, breast augmentation, chemical peel, injectable fillers, hair replacement, laser skin resurfacing, rhinoplasty (nose job), and tummy tuck. There are variable levels of cost, risks, time commitment, and noticeable benefits when it comes to cosmetic surgery. A botox injection is a relatively simple procedure with minimal side effects and immediate results, whereas a breast augmentation involves major surgery and a much higher price tag.

Plastic surgery should only be performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. As with any surgery, complications may occur. Patients who smoke, or have connective-tissue disease, damaged skin from radiation therapy, HIV, or poor health should discuss these issues with a reputable plastic surgeon before deciding on surgery.

Plastic surgery is a major financial, medical, and emotional commitment. The type of procedure and individual nature of each case will determine the risks during the procedure and in recovery. Some conditions may require multiple surgeries over a span of time, or may be as simple as a short outpatient procedure at the doctor's office. Anyone who is indecisive or has unrealistic goals is not a good candidate for plastic surgery. If you are considering plastic surgery, talk to several reputable plastic surgeons to weigh the benefits and options and get several opinions.
