Forbes Magazine conducted a study of the physicians salary for a number of different specialties and came up with a list of the physicians with the highest average salary. It's important to note that salaries for physicians can vary widely depending on geography, experience and a variety of other factors. What follows are the physicians in the top 10, followed by the salary and a figure showing the percentage increase or decrease from 2006-2007 figures for the profession.

  1. Orthopedic Surgeon, $481,000, +16 percent - An orthopedic surgeon treats patients for a range of problems that include congenital deformities, trauma, infections, tumors, metabolic disturbances of the musculoskeletal system, deformities, injuries, and degenerative diseases of the spine, hands, feet, knee, hip, shoulder, and elbow in children and adults.
  2. Cardiologist, $419,000, +6 percent - A cardiologist is certified to treat problems of the cardiovascular system—the heart, arteries, and veins. Cardiology is classified as an internal medicine subspecialty.
  3. Urologist, $401,000, virtually unchanged. Urologists have specialized knowledge and skill regarding problems of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs.
  4. Gastroenterologist, $393,000, +7 percent. A gastroenterologist specializes in treating the digestive system, including problems with the gallbladder, stomach, intestines, or pancreas.
  5. Radiologist, $391,000, +3 percent. A radiologist is specializes in diagnosing and treating disease and injury by relying on four, main medical imaging techniques.
  6. Otolaryngologist, $377,000, +17 percent. An otolaryngologist handles both the medical and surgical treatment of diseases and conditions of the ear, nose and throat, as well as related areas of the head and neck.
  7. Anesthesiologist, $344,000, +11 percent. An anesthesiologist treats surgical patients, helping them through surgery, and focuses on pain relief, including conditions that cause chronic pain.
  8. Oncologist, $335,000, -1 percent. An oncologist studies, diagnoses and treats patients with cancerous tumors.
  9. General Surgeon, $321,000, +6 percent. A general surgeon is trained to provide surgical care of the whole patient and must be able to evaluate and treat patients with injuries and illness generally throughout the abdominal area.
  10. Dermatologist, $297,000, -6 percent. A dermatologist, the final entry on the top 10 list of top paid physicians, specializes in skin care and undergoes extensive training to treat skin problems and keep the skin healthy.
