A pest is any organism—usually an insect—that humans regard as damaging or unwanted. There are many pests that can inconvenience homeowners, both indoors and outdoors. A pest can cause structural, aesthetic, and agricultural damage, as well as potentially making the area unsafe to inhabit. Some pests are beneficial in one area but harmful in another, and some pests, like termites, you should exterminate immediately. You can eliminate pests in several ways, including chemical pesticides, deterrence measures, physical removal, and natural methods.

Some Common Pests

Ants

Ants are a common pest and have many species. There are at least nine different types of ants that humans consider pests, and each of them generally requires the services of a professional to exterminate, due to the adaptability and size of ant colonies. Ants can infest your home, lawn, or garden and cause damage to every area.

Aphids

Aphids primarily dwell within your garden and are small insects that eat plants. Aphids are among the most destructive pests on cultivated plants, and are widespread throughout the world. Plants with aphid damage display many symptoms, such as reduced growth, mottled and curled leaves, yellowing and browning of leaves and stalk, and death. In addition to causing damage in your garden, aphids can frequently transmit secondary disease-causing parasites and organisms to plants, which further damage them.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are a common household pest. They feed primarily on human and pet food and can enter your home through the smallest of openings. Though cockroaches pose little direct danger to humans, they can carry bacteria and microbes that are extremely hazardous, and can leave behind an unpleasant odor. The bacteria they carry may also aggravate asthma or trigger some allergic reactions.

Silverfish

Silverfish are small, wingless insects whose diet that consists primarily on carbohydrates. Silverfish are a nuisance, and can damage paper, photographs, carpet, clothing, drapes, cotton, linen, silk, and all types of synthetic fibers. Silverfish can be found almost everywhere on the planet and are an enemy of homeowners everywhere. They are incapable of transmitting diseases that affect humans, so while they can contaminate food and damage other items, they cannot transmit anything that can harm you.

A pest is an unwanted creature, organism, insect, rodent, or weed that inhabits an area that directly conflicts with progress. Some pests cause damage and are harmful to your health, while others can devastate plants and flowers. Therefore, it is important to hire a professional to inspect your home, lawn, and garden for pest damage. For more information about pests or how to exterminate them, contact a local pest control company.
