Moving can be a hassle. The larger the scale, the more difficult the task will be. The right packing supplies for your move will help save you time, energy, and stress.

A list of essential packing supplies includes:

1. Boxes - Obtain the correct size and number of boxes needed for your move. Used boxes can be obtained from your work or nearby businesses, like groceries and liquor stores. Boxes are also available for sale at packing supply companies, post offices, home improvement stores, etc. If you buy too many, retailers like storage facilities will buy back any unused boxes.

  • Small boxes - Approximately 17x12x12 in dimension. These are ideal for small items like DVDs and heavy objects like books.
  • Medium boxes - Approximately 18x18x16 in dimension. The most versatile size box which is ideal for packing most household items and comfortable handling.
  • Large boxes - Approximately 18x18x24 in dimension. Well-suited for large, bulky items like appliances, blankets, electronics, etc.
  • Wardrobe boxes - Approximately 24x21x46 in dimension. Equipped with a hanger bar, they can move cloves directly from the closet. Sometimes they are sold separately without the bar, so be sure to buy the bar if you will hang clothes.
  • Dish Barrel boxes - Approximately 18x18x28 in dimension. These are built with double wall protection for breakable objects like china plates. A cell kit that either comes with the box or is sold separately can be inserted into the box. The cell kit will divide items and offer added protection.
  • 2. Packing Tape - Buy several rolls of good-quality packing tape. It would be advisable to purchase packing tape that comes with a built-in dispenser. These dispensers are designed to facilitate taping up boxes.

    3. Packing Material - Old newspapers are suitable for cushioning and wrapping many household items. For more valuable and delicate items, use bubble wrap, blankets, and foam peanuts. Use shrink wrap to cover large items to keep drawers sealed or to protect unboxed items from dirt or scratches (like chairs and tables).

    4. Markers - Use these to mark your boxes on the outside to identify fragile items and other contents, indicate what room to place them in at the new home, etc.

    5. Labels - If you are unable to write directly onto your boxes, or if you can't read what was written, you may want to get or make labels to make organization and unpacking easier.

    6. Box-cutter - Have a quality knife or two available for unpacking your possessions.

A little planning goes a long way. Make sure you obtain the packing supplies you will need before you begin your move.
