Nutrition is an important way of maintaining ocular health and protecting vision as we get older. The whole eye needs vital nutrients that can all be obtained from our daily diet. Here is a rundown on some of the nutrients that are essential for ocular health.

Green Vegetables for Ocular Health

Green vegetables such as spinach, kale, cabbage, collard greens and broccoli are rich in carotenoids which are very beneficial for reducing the risk of macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is a disease of the eye that causes deterioration of the pigment in the center of the retina and can lead to a severe vision problem. It is the number one cause of irreversible blindness in men and women above 65 years old. Macular degeneration is not reversible though it can be treated with medication and vision therapy.

Leutine and Zeaxathin for Ocular Health

These are two specific carotenoids which can dramatically reduce the risk of cataracts. Around half of all Americans age 65 and above have some stage of this vision problem. Once you reach 70, the percentage increases dramatically. These days surgery for the removal of cataracts is safe and so effective that it can restore 100 percent of vision. Foods that can help prevent cataracts include broccoli, spinach, zucchini and collard greens. Leutine is also present in egg yolk.

Get Fruity for Ocular Health

Numerous studies have shown that fruit such as apricots, black currants, blueberries and bilberries can help maintain healthy eyesight. Not only can these fruits actually help to improve eyesight, they can also reduce eye fatigue and infection.

Vitamin C is also great for your ocular health because it helps reduce the damaged caused by exposure to sunlight.

Tomatoes for Ocular Health

Juicy red tomatoes are rich in a substance called lycopene. Lycopene is a phytochemical (also found in carrots) that can help improve night vision, reduce the risk of macular degeneration and prevent colorblindness.

Fish Oils for Ocular Health

Fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids can help boost eye health, strengthening eye muscle and preventing dry eyes. You can obtain omega-3s from cold-water fish such as tuna, salmon, cod and haddock or take cod liver or fish oil supplements.
