November - What Events Are Observed in November?

What is the November Month Meaning?

November is the eleventh month in the Gregorian calendar and one of only four months that contain 30 days. The name of the eleventh month of the year comes from the Latin for novem, meaning nine as it was the ninth month of the Roman calendar before the addition of January and February. Each common year February begins on the dame day of the week as March. November falls within the season of autumn in the northern hemisphere and spring in the southern hemisphere.

Month-long Events Observed in November

In the United States, November is the official month for a number of month-long national events, some of which are more unusual than others. Many of them are aimed at raising public awareness of health and safety issues, while others are just for fun. Here is a rundown:

  • National American Indian Heritage Month
  • National Alzheimer’s Disease Month
  • National Adoption Month
  • National AIDS Awareness Month
  • Family Stories Month
  • Lung Cancer Awareness Month
  • Epilepsy Awareness Month
  • Aviation History Month

Some days of the month also have their own special observances:

National Daily Observances for November

November 1st – National Author’s Day

National Author’s Day was set up in 1929 by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. It became recognized nationally in 1949. It is a celebration of men and women in American literature. A number of national events are organized on this day, including book readings and signings by popular authors.

November 6th – National Young Reader’s Day

This national observance was organized by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. The day was established to promote the pleasure and importance of reading for young people and their parents. Schools, families and young readers alike participate in this event with creative events focused on children’s literature.

Veteran’s Day – November 11th

Veteran’s day is the celebration of the World War I armistice. From 1919 – 1970 Veteran’s day was upheld on November 11th. Then in 1971 the “Monday Holiday Law,” meant that the national event had to take place on the fourth Monday in October. Gradually each state moved the observance back to November 11th and it reverted back in 1978.
