Moving storage containers are a convenient method of storage which may be useful when you need extra off-site storage or when you need to move your belongings, but it is important to pack these containers properly to reduce damage risks during the transport process.

Packing Boxes for Moving Storage Containers

Choose medium to small sized boxes to use in moving storage containers as large heavy boxes can shift and cause damage to the contents of the box and to other surrounding objects.

  • Always wrap items that are going to be packed in boxes with paper or cloth to prevent damage caused when belongings hit or rub up against one another during transport.
  • Do not pack heavy and fragile items in the same box.
  • Label each box with content info and make a note if the contents are fragile so you can pack them on top.
  • Wrap any fragile items with a thick layer of bubble wrap before you place them in a box.

Packing Moving Storage Containers

Always distribute the weight of your belongings evenly throughout the storage container – try to avoid packing too many heavy items on the sides or in the front or back of the unit; it may help to plan or map out how you are going to fill the container before you begin.

  • Pack the heaviest items on the bottom of the storage container and place lighter fragile boxes and belongings securely on top.
  • Wrap furniture pieces in blankets or protective furniture cloths to prevent scratches and nicks.
  • Tape bubble wrap over mirrors and picture frames, then tape cardboard over the bubble wrap for extra protection. Always store mirrors or picture frames up on their sides, never store them flat.

If your items are going to be in the storage containers for a long time, condition your furniture pieces with a protective and moisturizing oil to protect them against temperature and humidity fluctuations; wipe down any metal belongings, such as bicycles or appliances, with a clear oil to protect them against rust – and then wrap these items in a protective paper or cloth to keep the oil away from boxes or other items in the container.

You’ll want to completely pack moving storage containers to reduce any empty spaces that may allow your belongings to shift during transport; if you have empty spaces in the containers, use blankets or pieces of moving foam to fill up these spaces as much as possible.
