An important part of moving is choosing the right movers, whether your new home will be across the street or across the country. If you have decided to hire a moving company, you need professional movers who will be careful with your belongings, give you an accurate and fair rate and act in a professional manner.

Before choosing the right movers, consider what kind of move you are making. If you are moving to another house in the same town, you may want to hire a local moving company. If you’re moving to a different state, it might be better to hire professional movers from a national company.

Another part of choosing the right movers is thinking about how much of the work you want to do yourself. Some moving companies allow you to pack your own household goods and load them into the truck, which a mover will drive to your new home for you to unload. Or, you might prefer hiring movers who will pack your belongings, load them onto a truck and put them in place at your new home.

Once you have decided how much of the packing you would like to do yourself, find two or three moving companies that seem like a good fit. Contact each of these companies and ask for each of them to come to your home so they can provide an accurate cost estimate. Most movers will do this for free. Check out whether each company is registered with the Federal Motor Safety Carrier Administration and any licenses that may be required in your state. Ask for references from previous customers.

Make sure you know how much compensation you will receive if your belongings are lost or damaged. Professional movers can offer different options for valuation, which is different from insurance. You may also buy optional insurance on top of the valuation offered by the movers.

Once you have the estimates from each moving company, compare the costs, services offered and estimates of how long the move will take. After you have taken these steps, you can be sure that you are choosing the right movers.
