Today's modern decor is all about clean lines, open spaces and neutral tones highlighted with a splash of color. Fortunately, you can achieve a modern style to your interior space with a few simple, but big, changes. Follow these modern decor ideas below, and your special space will be on its way to the 21st century.

  • Unclutter - Your number one step to modern decor is to clear out all clutter. No matter how much you update furniture and color schemes, modern open spaces and clean lines can never be achieved with a cluttered room. Shelves should feature one or two objects - such as a book, picture frame or a special knick knack - coffee and end tables should have bare surfaces, and any loose cords or appliances need to be neatly tucked away; minimize the amount of furniture in the room as well to achieve an open and airy feel.
  • Color - Next, give your space an updated look with the use of modern decor colors. Use soft whites and creams on your walls and update a dark rug or wooden floor with an area rug made of natural tones such as sage green, light beige or soft yellows. Now, you will need a splash of color. Use a furniture piece - or a large colorful painting or artistic work - made with bright color(s) that will highlight the room. Whichever color highlights you use, choose a color palette that will complement the natural tones in the room.
  • Lighting - A few changes in lighting will also make a big difference to the style of your space. Switch out any ornate and overly decorative lamps and light-bulb covers to simple lighting pieces which combine round orb-like shapes complimented by sharp design accents. Bright lights need to be tempered down as well to give the space a comforting, welcoming, feel. If you have too many ceiling lights in the room, use a standing lamp in the corner of the room to softly light the room.
  • Furniture and Appliances - Complete your updated look by modernizing your furniture and appliances. Fluffy sofas and chairs are out: clean squared off couches and chairs made with eco-friendly teak or bamboo woods are in. Kitchen appliances featuring cream colors are out: stoves and refrigerators made of stainless steel are in. Likewise, rounded bedroom furniture should be traded for simple, squared off pieces.

As you update your space, keep in mind the philosophy behind today's modern decor ideas. The room should be open, welcoming and functional. Avoid any type of clutter, maximize your use of natural lighting and, above all, focus on achieving a look which emphasizes clean lines and simplicity.
