Composition

Most metal roof tiles are normally made from steel, aluminum, copper or zinc. Aluminum and steel are the most common metal roof tiles for residential purposes. Some metal roof tiles are made of composite metals or several types of metals. For example, some steel roof tiles may have a layer of zinc for durability.

Most metal roof tiles often consist of several layers of materials. The center core is steel or another metal, which forms the strength of the tile. Some metal roof tiles may have fiberglass or a composite metal core, which is sprayed or coated in liquid metal, like stainless steel.

The next two layers may be metal or layers with fiberglass or plastics. Then a top coat of paint is added. A final protective surface coating, like a varnish, is then added to protect the paint from fading due to weathering.

Styles and Colors

Metal roof tiles can be made to replicate several styles of roofing, including clay tiles, slate tiles, cedar shingles and other conventional roofing styles. Metal roof tiles are often used in modern homes, and interlocking metal roof tiles can provide a traditional look. Some manufacturers also offer custom color matching for metal roof tiles, in addition to their standard colors.

Advantages of Metal Roof Tiles

Although the upfront costs are more expensive, many homeowners like the durability and low maintenance aspects of this roofing product. Metal roof tiles are more resistant to extreme weather, like hail. This type of roofing can also withstand insect attacks, like termites. Some homeowners also get a discount on their homeowner’s insurance because of metal roof tiles are very fire resistant. Depending on the manufacturer, metal roof tiles can have from 20 years to lifetime warranties.

Due to the reflective nature of metal, many homeowners also see lower cooling bills, especially in hotter climates. Many metal roof tiles are Energy Star rated. Some metal roof tiles may also be made partly from recycled metals. In comparison to clay roof tiles, metal roof tiles are lighter. Some metal roof tiles can be applied directly over an existing roof made from another material, which makes it ideal for replacing an existing roof with extra costs for removal.

Installation

Metal roof tiles are usually not recommended in areas with hurricanes. Proper installation of metal roof tiles is paramount. Often times, cutting and edging metal roof tiles require some skill, in order not to scratch the coating or damage the tiles in any way. Homeowners should contact qualified metal roofing experts for advice and price quotes.
