Los Angeles: Roller Disco Fun at Space is the Place

Are you a fan of costume parties? Do you have fond memories of strapping on a pair of roller skates and hitting the roller rink as a kid? Do you also like cocktails and karaoke? If so, then Space is the Place is guaranteed to be a night of fun for you and your friends.

Space is the Place is a monthly roller skating event that takes place at one of the few roller rinks still operating in Los Angeles – World on Wheels. Occurring on the fourth Saturday of every month, this party on quads is one of the simplest ways to transport yourself back to the glory days of the 1970s and 1980s.

The first thing you should know about Space is the Place is that costumes are strongly encouraged. Thankfully, the friendly crowd is happy to oblige, decking themselves out in all manner of 1970s and 1980s themed outfits. That's right, we're talking tall stripey socks, loads of neon, tie-dye and the occasional large-sized afro wig. So dig through your closet to find some retro clothes if you so desire.

Enter the roller rink, and it will be exactly like walking into an oasis out of your childhood. There's the arcade games, the over-priced concession stand and the incredibly busy carpet pattern.

Of course, out on the roller rink is where the real action can be found. While the floor can get pretty crowded as the night goes on, there tends to be plenty of room for rolling around. If you can't seem to peel yourself away from the wall, don't worry – you won't be the only one.

Once you get the hang of skating again, then it's time to just sit back, relax and enjoy the 70s and 80s jams rocking over the sound system. For added fun, be on the lookout for the 'trains' of people that frequently form. Everyone's friends here - so just join in the fun and grab onto the waist of the last person in line!

When you're ready to give your feet a break, then you may want to slip off your skates and head upstairs to the bar (store your skates in a locker if you plan on coming back down). Here, you can indulge in cheap drinks and get yourself on the list to sing karaoke. While you're welcome to sing any song you want, those vintage costume of yours may call for a little Billy Idol or Village People.

Space is the Place: 4th Saturday of every month, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
