Most people probably never think about locksmith companies until their home has been broken into or there is some kind of concern about the safety or security of their home. That means you could be choosing from locksmith companies in the middle of the night during a crisis. That's not the way anyone should find a company to provide security services. Instead, take time to search for reliable locksmith companies when you have no need at all for locksmith services.

What do You Need from Locksmith Companies?

A good place to start in the search for a great locksmith company is an understanding of your expectations and needs. Many locksmith companies provide a wide range of services, ranging from work on cars, homes and all of the above on an emergency basis. Unless your home or business offers particularly complex locksmith issues, it's probably a good idea to hire one person for all of your lock smith needs.

Interview a Number of Locksmith Companies

The best way to find a locksmith that stands out among other locksmith companies is to compare the services and prices of a number of companies. If you are in a small town, check for nearby locksmiths and see if they service your area. If you live in a large city, then make sure you have 3 to 5 locksmith companies to interview. Consider some of the following questions:

  • What experience do you have?
  • Can you provide references?
  • Can you show me proof of insurance and a license, if required?
  • What services do you provide and what are your prices?
  • For 24-hour services, are there any extra costs, such as trip charges?

Check the Credentials of any Locksmith Companies You Are Considering

Part of the process of checking credentials should include calling up anyone on the list of references provided by the locksmith companies. Make sure that there are both current or recent customers as well as older customers and ask everyone if they would hire the locksmith company again. Check with the Better Business Bureau to see about any complaints filed against the company and how those complaints were resolved. Many states have locksmith associations that require licensing and offer information about individual locksmiths in the state. Check with the association for any additional tips on how to make sure the locksmith companies you deal with are reputable and trustworthy.
