For U.S. broadcasting, the digital TV transition was completed on June 12, 2009. On this date, all analog signals were eliminated in favor of digital broadcasting. Though the major hubbub about the transition is essentially over, there are still plenty of pertinent questions related to the topic. Learn about the digital TV transition and how it affects your television viewing.

Does the DTV Transition Affect Your TV?

Prior to the digital transition, television sets were outfitted with an analog tuner. As the march towards digital approached, TV manufacturers began to include an internal digital tuner as well. If you purchased a new TV in the past couple years, then chances are your television is equipped to handle digital broadcasting.

On the other hand, if your TV is older, then steps may need to be taken to access channels. The easiest and most common step is to simply subscribe to cable or satellite TV. The set-top box provided by the television company will serve as a digital converter so you can watch all your favorite shows regardless of TV type.

If you don't wish to purchase cable, then a special digital converter box is required.

Are Free Digital Converter Boxes Still Available?

During the run up to the digital TV conversion, the government was offering rebate coupons that allowed families with analog TVs to acquire a digital converter box free of charge. Unfortunately, this rebate program has expired. If you still need a converter box, then you should know that they can easily be found at most electronics stores. Thankfully, they aren't all that expensive, and can be found for as low as $40 in some locations.

Improving Signal Strength of Digital Converters

Antennas used for the digital TV transition can be finicky when it comes to finding a clear signal. To improve signal strength, the easiest solution is to adjust the location of your digital antenna. Type of antenna may also affect quality. If your digital connections are coming in unclear, then you might also check the connections on the antenna and digital converter to ensure proper connection. While digital quality should be sufficient in most areas, outdoor obstructions such as trees and buildings may interfere. If such is the case, then investing in a signal booster or simply upgrading to cable TV or satellite can help.
