Layered haircuts will add texture and style to your coiffure, but it is important to get the right layer for your type of hair and the shape of your face. To make sure you find the perfect layered cut, consult with a stylist and use these tips below.
Layered Haircuts and Facial Shape
Layered haircuts can be extremely complimentary to your facial shape as long as the layers are cut at the right points:
Round shaped faces look most flattering with a layered hairstyle, long or short, which adds layers just below the chin. This type of layer will elongate the face and emphasize the eyes. Bangs, if any, should be swept to one side or the other.
Heart shaped faces look best with soft layers incorporated throughout the length of the hair, but the overall shape of the layers should be a slight oval – thinner at the top and thicker nearer the chin and then gently thinning out again towards the bottom.
Square shaped faces can be rounded out and lengthened with a layered cut which utilizes deep feathering layers beginning at the eyebrows and then going down the length of the hair. Bangs should be avoided.
Oval shaped faces look best when the layers begin around the shoulders. Soft or blunt layered cuts both work well with oval faces.
Layered Haircuts and Hair Thickness
Layered haircuts can be used to thin out extremely thick hair, but these types of cuts can also be used to create a thicker fuller look if you have thin hair – it all depends on the type of cut and the layers which are added.
If you have thin hair, a shorter hair cut is best (especially a lovely bob) and layers should be soft and minimal – too much layering can make thin hair appear even thinner than before, so it is important to find an experienced stylist who knows how to layer thin hair.
Likewise, layers for extra thick hair work great on long, medium and short hair – but if you want to lighten the amount of hair on your head or increase manageability choose a thinning layer haircut which adds blunt or soft vertical layers instead of horizontal layers.
Layered Haircuts and Naturally Curly Hair
Layered haircuts on curly hair can be especially challenging, even for experienced stylists, but the right type of layer for curly hair can increase curl and reduce frizz. It is best to avoid extremely short layers and razor edge layers on curly hair because a poodle-like effect can occur. Instead, layers should work with the weight of the hair and look best on medium to long curly locks.
