Some homeowners simply do not have the time to keep their lawn looking spectacular year after year, but they don’t want to give up having a lawn that’s always thick and healthy. If this is the case, then it may be time to hire a lawn mowing service to do the work for you. There are several things to keep in mind when shopping around for lawn mowing services. Not only do you want the company to do a good job for you, but you want to be sure that its philosophy and approach to lawn care is in line with your own. Here are some tips on what to look for in lawn mowing services.

  1. Are they highly recommended? This is such an important step when looking for lawn mowing services or any type of contract service. Fortunately, the Internet provides many avenues of research. Talk to neighbors, but also check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have recently been lodged. You might also look to see if there is an online referral service available in your area, where you can get independent consumer reviews on different local companies.
  2. Do they offer a flat monthly rate? Two types of billing are typically offered: one where you pay per visit and one where you pay a single rate for the month. The problem with single billing is that it can encourage multiple visits, leading to possibility of the company over mowing your lawn. Your best bet is to find out what the monthly rate includes and how that compares to your needs versus what a per visit plan might cost you. If you do go with an individual billing plan, be clear on how often the yard will need mowing and how that will be determined.
  3. What kind of fertilization program do they employ? If you’d like to go the organic route, then find out ahead of time what lawn mowing services offer organic fertilizer options. Be sure they plan to test your soil, as this will lead to a more efficient allocation of nutrients that will be healthier for your lawn and cheaper for you. Also inquire as to the fertilizing schedule they follow. Over fertilization, particularly with chemical substances, can actually serve to weaken the grass over the long term and will lead to a greater immediate need to irrigate and mow.
  4. Will they use pesticides? Particularly if you have children or pets, you need to know ahead of time if the company you’re considering hiring uses pesticides and herbicides, and if so, what kinds. Depending on your stance on chemical use in the yard, you may want to see if the company offers alternatives to inorganic treatments. Find out what procedures are in place to protect you and your family during and after treatment, and determine if the company has liability insurance in case any mishaps occur.
  5. What’s in the contract? Go over the lawn services contract carefully before you sign. Know what specific services are included and what will cost extra, and find out if the work is guaranteed. Be sure you’re clear on the schedule, so you know when to expect service each month. Look into their cancellation policy as well, in case the need arises to terminate the contract.
