Many companies that offer landscape design also provide landscaping maintenance. Once your garden, yard, driveway or pool area has gotten a new design, everything looks perfect for about a week or two. Keeping that same look throughout the year will depend on whether you have planned for any landscape maintenance.

Some Aspects of Landscaping Maintenance

Landscaping maintenance usually requires workers trained in the upkeep of gardens and yards because the service is much more than mowing a lawn, edging the sides and blowing the clippings into a pile to be used as mulch or thrown away. That is a valuable yard service, but is something that can also be handled by a teenager or anyone with a lawn mower, weed-eater, leaf blower and an hour or so of free time. Landscaping maintenance is more involved and often involves these tasks:

  • Pond maintenance. Checking on the aquatic plants and feeding any fish, along with making sure the pumps and mechanical aspects of the pond are operating efficiently and the pH balance is sufficient for the fish and plants.
  • Mulching. This involves knowing the proper mulch to use for areas around trees or in gardens, depending on whether they are shade gardens or get direct sunlight and when the mulch should be replaced.
  • Pruning plants. Some specific knowledge of the care and maintenance of specific plants, whether they be annuals, perennials or biennials, is required so the pruning doesn't damage the plants.
  • Plant dividing. Some of the shrubs in your garden can be divided so that more plants will emerge the next spring. This area of landscaping maintenance requires care and knowledge about the specific plants, including the proper use of fertilizer.
  • Tree and hedge trimming. If you have trees in your yard, you may want a landscaping maintenance company with arborists - tree experts. Your trees can keep winter winds and summer's direct sunlight off of your house while helping the environment by taking in carbon dioxide. In return, you should have experts who can spot diseases and insect infestation and can ensure the proper care and maintenance of your trees.
  • Pool landscape. You probably spent a lot of money to beautify the area surrounding your pool, and you'll want any garden areas regularly weeded and trimmed and new plants brought in as necessary. Landscaping maintenance also requires expertise in any irrigation and lighting issues - many of which can be connecting to pool landscaping.
