Safety and Convenience at the push of a button

The widespread use of a keyless remote for your garage has all but eliminated the days of standing in the rain and wrestling with the door to the garage, hoping it stays up while you pull your car in, and reversing the process before going into the house. Automatic garage door openers are so popular it is becoming hard to find anyone these days who still has to manually lift their garage door. The garage door is the largest moving object in one's home. A keyless entry system uses a simple technology to provide both convenience and safety.

The electric opener powers the mechanical parts that lift the door. The motorized unit attaches to a track mounted on the ceiling of the garage. Riding on the track is a trolley connected to a hinged arm which in turn attaches to the door itself. When the motor on the opener is activated, the trolley slides along the track, guided by either a chain, belt or screw, and lifts the door.

The entire system is controlled by the signal emitted from a keyless remote programmed to interact with the motor's sensor. Original designs for remote controlled garage door openers consisted of a basic transmitter and simple receiver. Unfortunately, the frequency used in that system tended to activate more than one system, so opening your door sometimes meant opening your neighbor’s as well. Advances in keyless remote technology have increased the frequency spectrum of remote sensors so one opener opens one door.

In addition, most transmitters and receivers found today use a hopping or rolling code technology--once the transmitter's code is sent, an internal encoder generates a new code for the next time, making it virtually impossible for anyone but the owner of the remote to open the garage.

The keyless remote for your garage can be either a small device kept in your car, or a keyfob you carry with you. A button inside the garage is also programmed to transmit to the motor, allowing you to push it and open the door. Additional features programmed in the more sophisticated keyless systems include:

  • Automatic courtesy lights which go on temporarily when the door is opened or if a motion sensor is activated.
  • A remote lockout feature that turns the receiver off if you're going to be gone for an extended period of time.
  • Integrated carbon monoxide sensors to automatically open the door if exhaust fumes build up.
  • Fingerprint-based or pushbutton keypads outside the door.
