Keyless door locks are secure locking devices that function by means of an electrical current. You don’t have to worry about losing your keys because this type of lock does not require any.

Different Types of Keyless Door Locks

There are several different types of electronic door locks. The most basic is the magnetic lock which is comprised of an electro-magnet mounted on the frame of the door and a magnetic armature mounted on the door itself.

Stand alone locks have the electronic control attached. The mechanism is usually operated by means of a numerical keypad. When the correct combination of digits is pressed into the keypad, an electronic signal is transmitted and the lock is released.

Electronic variations of cylinder and mortise locks are available. The electronic mortise and cylinder locks can fit in the same spaces on the door as the regular locks; all you will need to do is drill holes for the electrical wires and to fit a power transfer hinge.

Authentication of Keyless Door Locks

There are a number of different options for authenticating your electronic locks. These include:

Keypad code – the most common forms of authentication are numerical codes, passwords or key phrases. Typically combinations are between 7-10 digits or letters long so that they are easily remembered.

Biometrics – newer security locks make use of fingerprint or retinal scanning. Others may instead use voice identification. These are the most secure types of keyless lock as security cannot be breached by anyone with unauthorized access.

Security Cards – these cards are swiped through a card reader to allow access. This type of authentication is useful if you have a number of different keyless locks but only want to allow access to certain people.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) – this method uses an RFID tag which a person wears. These tags can be read from several feet away from the electronic reader.

Advantages of Electronic Door Locks

There are a number of advantages to electronic locks including:

  • No need for keys
  • Combinations can be changed without having to change the lock itself
  • You can control access
  • You can set times access
  • You can log activity of the lock
  • You have complete system control

The advantages of Keyless Door Locks

There are many advantages of installing keyless door locks. One of the main ones is the fact that you have complete control of the security system and who is able to have access to the locks. This means that you can set individual locks to be used by certain people at certain times of day if you desire. It also enables you to maintain a log of all access to each individual lock 24 hours a day, seven day a week so you will know if there has been unauthorized access, or if someone has been trying to tamper with any of the locks. You can also change lock keypad combinations without having to make changes to the lock itself, and best of all you don’t have to worry about losing your keys.
