January - What Events Are Observed in January?

What is the January Month Meaning?

The name of the first month of the year comes from the Roman god Janus who has the god of doorways and gates as well as beginnings and endings. Janus is usually depicted as having two faces pointing in opposite directions. According to Roman mythology, the god Saturn gave Janus the ability to see into the past and the future. Other names for January that have been used in the past include Wulf-monath (wolf month), Ianuarious (the original Roman name) and Wintarmonth (designated by Charlemagne.)
