What is Iron Chef?

Dining Out

Iron Chef America is an American TV series that was inspired by a similar series made by Japan’s Fuji Television. The United States also shows a dubbed version of Japan’s Iron Chef.

The Origin of Iron Chef

Like the original Japanese series, the American version is a culinary competition in which the current winner competes against a newcomer for the title of Iron Chef. All contestants are qualified and experienced chefs, some well known through their own restaurants and as television personalities. In Iron Chef America, the competing chefs are judged by a panel of expert food critics and the show is commentated by Alton Brown.

The Iron Chefs Compete

In each show, the two competing chefs have one hour to prepare a range of at least five dishes incorporating a theme ingredient chosen by the judging panel. When the hour is up, the panel of three judges taste the dishes and comment and give points to each for their originality, flavor and presentation. The chef taking the higher score wins the title of Iron Chef. Unlike the original Japanese version in the American version if both teams tie, the tie remains in place. In the Japanese version in the occasion of a tie, both chefs must compete in an overtime battle with a new theme ingredient.

Kitchen Stadium

Kitchen Stadium America is located in the Chelsea Market in New York City. It is filled with the best quality kitchen equipment which includes;

  • Stove tops with six gas burners
  • Blast chillers
  • Infrared grills
  • Large convection ovens
  • Deep fryers
  • Large food blenders
  • Food processors
  • Ice cream machine
  • Pantry stations

The Next Iron Chef

2007 – a competition pitted eight chefs against each other to see who would become the next Iron Chef. The six episode series followed contestants through eight challenges that took place across the glob from the United States to Germany.

2009 – this second season of Next Iron Chef saw the chefs battling the rounds of culinary battles from United States to Japan. Contestants were eliminated in each episode until the champion remained.

Iron Chef Game

In 2008 an Iron Chef video game entitled Iron Chef America: Supreme Cuisine was developed by Black Lantern Studios and published by Destineer. The game is available for Nintendo and Wii operating systems. The game features include virtual culinary challenges and a range of famous irons chefs for players to pitch their culinary skills against. The game has received only mediocre reviews.
