Within the human resources industry there are 3 key positions, but the roles of the human resource employee sometimes overlap – particularly in smaller businesses. Human resource job positions include:

Human Resources Assistant: the HR assistant is in charge of keeping records on employee data including address, position, pay, health insurance, sick leave and vacation time and sometimes an HR assistant will perform secretarial duties as well. The average salary for this position is $35,000 to $40,000 per year.

Human Resources Generalist: the HR generalist will work with HR assistants to carry out the directives of the HR manager. In some instances, the HR generalist will take on roles associated with traditional HR assistant or managing positions. The average salary for these positions varies around $48,000 to $63,000 per year.

Human Resources Manager/Director: the HR manager oversees all human resource aspects of company personnel including hiring, performance assessments, employee policies, benefits, salaries, and employee complaints. The average salary for this position is $100,000 plus per year.

Requirements for a Human Resource Job

Employees who work in human resources – from assistant to manager positions – require excellent people skills, expertise working with computers and proficiency in mathematics.

Assistant human resource job qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and possibly some post-secondary education in computers, sociology or psychology; however, many human resource assistants receive on the job training and may qualify for a position without post-secondary education.

A human resource generalist position usually requires a bachelor’s degree with a major which focuses on psychology, finance/accounting, business, working with computers, sociology and science courses.

To qualify for a human resource manager/director position applicants require a bachelor’s degree plus a graduate degree in human resources and business management.
