A simple house cleaning checklist will make it easy for you to understand what you'll be getting from your maid service. It's also an effective way to customize the service for your needs during seasonal cleanings or for a specific occasion.

A Typical House Cleaning Checklist

Designed for convenience in mind, this at-a-glance checklist will make it easy for a visiting maid to understand your wishes. Whether you use the same maid for each visit or rotate through a number of cleaning technicians, it's a quick and effective way to order service.

Most cleaning checklists are broken out by room and will include the items below:

In living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, dens, and entries:

  • Cleaning light switches and door handles
  • Dusting baseboards, tables, stairs, and banisters
  • Emptying wastebaskets
  • Removing dust and cobwebs from ceilings, shelves, and windows
  • Vacuuming floors, sofas, and chairs
  • Cleaning mirrors
  • Making beds
  • Washing or sweeping linoleum and tile floors
  • Sweeping wood floors

In Bathrooms:

  • Dusting and removing cobwebs. (This includes light fixtures, ceiling fans, mirrors, and window sills and molding.)
  • Cleaning mirrors
  • Cleaning vanity countertops and fronts
  • Washing interior windows
  • Dusting base boards
  • Sweeping or vacuuming
  • Washing floors
  • Emptying wastebaskets
  • Cleaning toilets
  • Cleaning showers, tubs, sinks, faucets, and soap dishes

In kitchens:

  • Dusting ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Dusting cabinets, window sills, and appliances
  • Cleaning the stove and range hood
  • Cleaning sinks, faucets, and cabinets
  • Cleaning countertops
  • Washing the floor
  • Emptying wastebaskets
  • Washing dishes
  • Cleaning appliance interiors (stove, refrigerator, etc.)

This list isn't extensive, and it doesn't include more intensive cleaning that may be necessary every few months to keep cabinet interiors and other areas sparkling.

Before you sign up with a cleaning service, make sure to do a walk-through of your home and write notes on specific areas that you believe may need attention. Every home has trouble spots, like mud rooms, which may require additional effort. You'll get better service and be more satisfied with the results if you are completely honest about your needs and expectations from the very beginning.

On the day of your first cleaning with a service, review the house cleaning checklist thoroughly to make sure you haven't forgotten to address something. Make notes about specific methods you may prefer. If you have appliances or furniture that require unique handling, review maintenance and care instructions ahead of time so you can provide good information and guidance to the technician, and be sure to write your instructions directly on the checklist for easy reference.
