House bugs can be any pest that inhabits your home. Many house bugs are common throughout the country, and knowing what they are and how to kill them can be of great benefit to homeowners. Fortunately, some bugs are local to parts of the country, so while you may not necessarily encounter them, you should be familiar with the most common house bugs.

Common house bugs include:

  • Ants
  • Cockroaches
  • Fruit flies
  • Spiders
  • Silverfish

Ants

There are at least nine different species of ants that can infest your home. They can do structure damage, aesthetic damage, and some species can even be venomous. The most common way of eradicating these house bugs is to use insecticide baits or boric acid. The ants take the insecticide back to the nest, which poisons the entire nest, killing all inhabitants.

Cockroaches

There are roughly four different species of cockroaches that can infest your home. Cockroaches feed on human and pet food, can have an offensive odor, and can carry certain microbes that are potentially dangerous to humans. Cockroaches can survive freezing temperatures and can go at least three months without food and at least one month without water. Though they typically do not cause any damage to your home, cockroaches are a health hazard you should eliminate immediately. The same methods used to kill ants typically work on cockroaches. These typically include bait stations and boric acid.

Fruit Flies

Fruit flies are very common house bugs. They can nest and develop anywhere that food can rot and ferment or anywhere that organic, moist materials are. A fruit fly can lay upwards of 500 eggs in its lifetime, though its average lifespan is about a week. You can find fruit flies mainly in the kitchen area of most homes, where fruits and other food is readily available. The best way to both remove and prevent a fruit fly infestation is to eliminate all potential breeding grounds. No matter how many times you apply an insecticide or how many traps you set, if they are still able to breed, you cannot get rid of the problem.

Spiders

Spiders that infest your home can actually be more beneficial than harmful. These spiders capture and eat many of the other pests that can infest your home. Some species of spiders can be venomous and a danger to humans, so it is best to contact a pest control expert if you have spiders in your home. You do not need to kill non-venomous spiders, as capturing them and releasing them outside your home is an effective method of removal.

Silverfish

Silverfish infest anywhere with high humidity, such as bathrooms, garages, basements, closets, and attics. Silverfish subsist on polysaccharides, which are things like glue, paper, photographs, sugar, coffee, hair, carpet, dandruff, and sometimes tapestries. Silverfish are also able to eat cotton, linen, silk, synthetic fiber of all kinds, dead insects, their own molted exoskeletons, and leather. Because silverfish can cause so much household damage, they are a major pest and you should eliminate them immediately. The most effective way to eliminate a silverfish infestation is to remove its source of food and make the common living areas uninhabitable for them. If you need to use a pesticide, boric acid once again is a valuable tool.

Common house bugs like the ones listed can cause a lot of damage and be quite annoying. Though most of them are not directly harmful to humans, they can create adverse living conditions, spread disease, damage property, and instill fear. Knowing what kind of pest you have is a good first step in knowing how to eliminate the infestation. For more information on other common house bugs and how to remove them, contact a local pest control company.
