The North American bald-faced hornet is the most common type of hornet plaguing American households and is a cousin to wasps and yellow jackets. However, hornets are much more dangerous than their relatives, as they are larger insects, have larger nests, and insert more venom into their prey when they sting. As a type of social wasp, hornets tend to live in nests containing anywhere from several hundred to several thousand hornets, which makes hornet pest control somewhat dangerous.

Depending on where hornets are nesting in or near your home, it is likely that you may need to enlist the help of a professional pest control company to rid your home of these insects. However, when determining whether it is better to call a professional or attempt to solve the problem yourself, it can be helpful to know some ways you can get rid of hornets on your own.

When it comes to keeping your home hornet-free, one of the best methods of hornet pest control is often prevention. An excellent way to prevent hornets from entering your home in the first place is to inspect your home for crevices and holes in which hornets could build their nests. In addition, it is also a good idea to determine if you have any existing hornet nests during this inspection.

Size of the Nest

If you do find a hornet nest in or near your home, the first thing you should do is determine how big it is. If the nest is only a few inches in size, chances are there are only a couple of hornets and it should be relatively easy to knock down the nest. If you find a larger hornet nest, however, it is very likely that there are hundreds or even thousands of stinging hornets inside. Therefore, if you discover such a nest, it is best to contact a professional pest control company immediately. While this may require a bit of an investment, avoiding the painful hornet stings that can cause severe allergic reactions is well worth any cost.

Killing the Hornets

If you determine the hornet nest in or near your home is small enough for you to remove on your own, you should purchase some wasp and hornet killer. When doing this, look for insecticide that sprays several feet, as this enables you to kill the hornets while staying as far away as possible from their nest. Keep in mind that hornets are incredibly dangerous and have the ability to sting their victims numerous times at once. Therefore, it is a good idea to wear thick, protective clothing that covers every part of your body. You should also approach the nest at dawn or dusk, as this is the time the hornets are most likely to be inside the nest.

Hornet pest control can be incredibly dangerous, especially since hornets are incredibly aggressive insects. While it may be possible to rid your home of hornets yourself depending on the extent of the infestation, it is usually best to contact a pest control company.
