Description

Although some home stagers have previous experience as interior designers or real estate agents, many consultants join the field by taking home staging courses. Home stagers offer advice to a seller so they can make a house more attractive to a buyer. Their reports advise home sellers on how to free up space in the house, organize clutter, change décor color and accentuate the house’s positive features. Home stagers can also rearrange furniture, add new furniture, remove accessories and give decorating advice. The home stager’s suggestions often translate into faster sales and higher priced offers for the house.

Local Courses

If you know a real estate agent, ask them which home stagers have done good work for them in the past. Ask other home stagers where they took courses at and who they recommend. You can also contact your local or national chapter of a nonprofit home staging association or even a real estate organization.

Sometimes a ‘star’ home stager lives in your town or will visit your town. This master home stager may offer several courses during a month at a local venue. You can register and take these classes in person. Also, many franchised home staging companies offer courses. They often advertise in business, interior design or real estate trade magazines.

Online Courses

You can also find many online home staging courses, which use online videos, lectures, notes and other multimedia resources. Choose a reputable company, ask for references, and make sure you feel comfortable using the technology before you opt for this type of course.

Find an instructor who will answer your questions and give you feedback. Also, ask about whether the training company will help you network and market your business. Some programs also offer an internship or additional hands on training.

Costs and General Advice

Home staging courses vary in price. The normal price for several home staging courses ranges from about $995 to $2500. Often times, you will get a price break if you register early, prepay or take all the classes at one time.

Since you are taking more than just one class, taking several home staging courses is like getting a certification in a particular field. However, unlike a real estate license, there is no state commission or regulatory board to monitor or test applicants for home staging. Review all your options. Compare the curriculum, instructor, reputation, cost, marketing /networking support and hands on experience for all programs. Then choose the best home staging courses for your needs.
