Home plumbing is something everyone needs and also takes for granted. It keeps everything running smoothly in the home and allows for modern conveniences like running water and toilets. Most people don’t think to contact a plumber regularly for maintenance until something breaks. However, with the proper knowledge and plumbing tools, homeowners can take back control of home plumbing repairs. When taking on the hefty task of home plumbing repairs, knowing a few tips can be very useful.

Following are a few of the most common plumbing repairs homeowners encounter:

  • Shutting off the water supply
  • Repairing faucets
  • Cleaning drains

Shutting Off the Water Supply

Before attempting to repair any plumbing issues, it is important to shut off the water supply to the area to avoid potential flooding. Items that require fixing typically have their own shut-off valves; however, if these valves are not easily located, it is best to turn off the main water supply, which is usually located in the basement or outside the home near the gas or electric meter. If one is unable to turn off the main water supply, it is time to call the utility company to request that someone come and turn the water off.

Repairing Faucets

As one of the most necessary plumbing fixtures in one’s home, faucets can cause some of the worst plumbing issues. There are four main types of faucets: compression, disk, cartridge, and ball. Compression faucets are the most common type and can be turned or off by two faucets. Disc, ball, and cartridge faucets all operate with a single handle that can be flipped up or down to control water. To properly repair one’s faucet, it is important to know the faucet’s make and type. It is also a good idea to take the faucet to the home improvement store to purchase parts for it, as this makes it easier to find the correct types of parts.

Cleaning Drains

While clogged drains are the nightmares of many homeowners, they can easily be fixed in some cases. If the clog in the drain is located in the trap or the pipes behind the trap, it can probably be repaired quite easily. However, if the clog is deeper inside the system, it is time to contact a professional plumber.

One way to prevent clogged drains is to prevent them from occurring. A good way to do this is to use the following mixture once a week in sink and bathtub drains:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup cream of tartar

For best results, pour equal amounts of this mixture into drains and follow it with two cups of boiling water.
While home plumbing repairs can be extremely stressful to deal with for homeowners who are unfamiliar with basic plumbing guidelines, having a few tips on how to repair the basics can save homeowners both time and money.
