The beauty of redecorating your house is that everyone has different home decorating styles they like to incorporate. Unless you work together or copy the same magazine room to the letter, you and your best friend will never have identical rooms in your home. Your individual tastes should flavor every undertaking to create a home bursting with personality.
Make a splash with color
Do you love the spring and summer months because of the vibrant colors of nature? If so, consider home decorating styles that appreciate color as much as you do. Start by kissing your plain white or ivory walls goodbye. Rather than making your walls fit the shade in the paint can, let the walls dictate the color that works best. As a guideline, small spaces need lighter shades and larger spaces call for darker colors. Painting a skinny accent wall with a dark burgundy in a small room isn’t the end of the world, but if you use that same rich shade for every wall then you risk making the room appear smaller than it is.
Another way to get the color you crave is to add wallpaper borders at the top of walls. These beauties come in a variety of patterns and give you just enough color to be interesting without going overboard. You can also hand paint the border using stencil or freehand techniques.
Twist the expected
Everyone has that one piece of furniture they love that isn’t as modern or stylish as they’d like. You no longer have to choose between tossing it and letting it look out of place. Instead, find ways to update your furniture to mimic your favorite home decorating styles.
Dining room furniture tends to fall into this category. Although the carved wood of the chairs is timeless, the white cushions leave something to be desired. You can recover the cushions using fewer yards of fabric than you might think. Don’t be afraid to consider fabrics and patterns you wouldn’t typically see on dining room furniture. As long as it reflects your sense of style and holds up to people sitting on it, you’re in good shape.
Learn the basics
Some of the basics to home decorating styles aren’t considered basic because of ease, it’s because the approach is classic and ageless. Consider neutral black and white rooms. Is it easy to decorate using two such daring colors as the centerpiece for design? Yes and no. Flowers are another basic element that not every room can pull off. After all, sticking stems in a vase is not the same thing as creating an arrangement. The key is to learn as much as you can about the basic elements of design to ensure you make the best use of each concept.
Keep in mind that there are dozens of home decorating styles to tantalize the imagination. Once your gut tells you you’ve found the correct style for your needs, stop looking and get to work.
