Hair Salons Do More Than Cut Hair

Salons and Spas

Many years ago, hair salons were exactly what the name suggested--a place to go and get your hair washed, cut, set and styled. Back then women sat around chatting and flipping through magazines as they waited with their hair in large rollers and most of the places looked very much the same. The "whole-head" hairdryers and cutting stations lined up in a row made them feel more like an assembly line than a hair salon that you would see today.

That is no longer the case. Rarely does a hair salon only serve as a place to get your hair cut and styled. Other services are frequently offered, such as adding hair extensions, manicures, facials or massages. Hair salons refer to themselves as "full service" to let people know that they provide more than just the basics. Some salons may start out doing just cuts, perms and coloring, but then grow to expand their services over time. When this happens, they may also change their name to reflect this by calling themselves a "hair salon and day spa since that’s a more descriptive name.

Part of the reason for this expansion of services is the demand for hair salons that are more of a "one stop shop". People are very busy these days and often find it easier to go to one place rather than making multiple appointments at different locations. The industry has responded to that by bringing more services together under one roof. The setting itself is also a bit more stylish than the simple, functional hair salons of the past era.

In order to find out specifically what a particular hair salon offers, it can be a good idea to take a look at their website if they have one available. Many businesses have an on-line presence and often the various services will be listed. Sometimes the website will also show the prices and the credentials of the technicians. If the salon does not have a website, you can always stop in and see if what services they offer or simply call and inquire.

Things such as cuts, styling, perms, coloring and highlights are among the expected services at a hair salon. "Extras" are typically things such as manicures, pedicures, hair waxing, makeup application and various skincare services. Some places may even offer services such as spray tanning and body scrubs for exfoliation. Overall, the hair salons and hair stylist today offer far more than they did years ago.
