For most people, seeing gray hair instantly makes them feel older. If this is the case for you, you may resort to hair coloring to hold onto your youthful appearance a little bit longer. To get rid of gray hair effectively, however, you should strongly consider getting a professional salon treatment.

Getting Rid of Gray Hair

To get rid of gray hair, you'll want to first schedule a consultation with a stylist from a reputable salon. Your hairstylist will assess the overall condition of your hair. Are you dealing with just your roots? A few strands? Your stylist will also determine the right hair-coloring product to use for covering your gray hair as there are products that can be damaging to the hair. In particular, permanent hair dye can be harmful to the hair, but will last much longer.

It is entirely up to you if you want permanent or semi permanent hair coloring, but you should also consider asking your stylist if the salon offers natural, organic, or henna products for coloring. Although not as permanent as the chemical options, you can rest assured that you are not damaging your hair and scalp if you go for a more natural gray hair solution.

Your stylist will also provide you with color ideas and explain the different methods that can be used to mask the gray hair. You can, for example, work with the gray hair and simply add highlights to it. On the other hand, you can use a color that is close to your natural hair color or completely go with a new shade. You can even bring a photo of a shade you’d like, but keep in mind that the darker the shade, the faster that your gray roots will become visible. Generally, it is advised to visit the salon every 4-6 weeks for touch-ups if you decide for a full hair dye job to mask your gray hair.

Another popular way of masking gray hair involves getting highlights. For some, highlights are a way of embracing your gray hair. Highlights can add a lot of texture and dimension to the hair and may be a more natural-looking way of getting rid of gray without giving your appearance a harsh look. If you choose to use a highlighting method, only certain strands of hair are colored. The gray hair can be covered or not, depending on the color scheme you would want to work with. Highlights usually range from 3-7 shades lighter. Highlights will also help brighten the hair and can be a good look for people of all ages.

Finally, a third option that offers even more body, texture, and volume, some people even prefer adding hair extensions to give the hair a total makeover instead of just covering gray hair.
