Grass Fertilizer

Fertilizer for your grass adds nutrients to your soil, making it an important part of lawn and garden care. The two basic types of grass fertilizer are organic grass fertilizer and inorganic grass fertilizer. Organic grass fertilizer is made from natural materials, such as mulch, compost and other natural components. Inorganic grass fertilizer is manufactured and uses chemicals, but it still provides essential nutrients for your plants and grass.

Organic grass fertilizer

Organic fertilizer for your grass may be processed for large-scale production, but it is still made entirely of naturally occurring products, including compost, moss, decomposing plants and other items. Organic grass fertilizer is not a fast solution to troubled or dying plants. The grass must break down all the nutrients from organic fertilizer before it can use them, rather than having them immediately available to absorb. By releasing the nutrients slowly, organic grass fertilizers are good for long, sustained growth and health of your lawn and plants.

Organic fertilizer can also be somewhat difficult to find. Many more garden stores carry various types of fertilizer for grass, but organic is still only available in limited selections. It is usually less expensive when it is available, however. While inorganic fertilizer can harm your soil with prolonged usage, organic grass fertilizer can actually help build it up by increasing the population of beneficial microorganisms.

Inorganic grass fertilizer

Inorganic grass fertilizer provides the nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil that plants need. It is engineered to be quickly absorbed by the plants and take effect almost immediately. If your lawn or plants are struggling or dying then using a fast-acting inorganic fertilizer for your grass can provide an immediate boost. Inorganic grass fertilizer is readily available at any plant nursery or hardware store.

The biggest disadvantage to using inorganic grass fertilizer is that they can leave behind salts that the plant can not absorb and are left in the soil. With enough time and usage, the soil can be left ineffective for future plant and lawn growth. Too much inorganic grass fertilizer can also harm the structure and root system of the plant. If you follow the instructions on the package and don’t use too much inorganic fertilizer on your grass or use it too often then it will be fine.

Organic and inorganic fertilizers for grass both have their strong points. Proper usage of either type of fertilizer will benefit your grass and other plants for years.
