What Does Energy Development Mean?

Energy development involves finding new, better and more sustainable sources of energy that do not harm the environment. Energy and electricity have become vital to all human existence. In developed countries, and even some undeveloped ones, there are very few- if any- people who live without electricity. Electricity allows people to store food, to make their homes a comfortable temperature, to cook food, to have light and to have entertainment. People have become dependent on electricity, but unfortunately much electricity, such as the electricity or energy that comes from the burning of fossil fuels, is bad for the environment and relies on non-renewable resource. Energy development specifically refers to the process of trying to make changes to how people get energy, so they can find more sustainable and better ways to power their lives.

What is Energy Development

Throughout history, energy development has specifically referred to progress made in the way energy is harnessed and used. For example, the invention of the first light bulb was an important example of energy development. Today, however, the term largely refers to the process of finding alternative sources of energy that do not rely on the burning of fossil fuel or that do not have as grave a potential impact on the environment as other sources of power such as nuclear power.

Two major types of sustainable energy being considered and used, to some extent, are solar power and wind power. Solar power harnesses the energy of the sun in silicone panels and stores it for later. Wind power uses wind turbines to harness the power of the sun. There are, however, two downsides to both of these breakthroughs in energy development. Solar panels are inefficient and many of them are required, leading to a high start-up cost and space problems. Wind turbines are also large and can be expensive to install.

While the alternative sources of energy in the current system can provide low cost electricity after the initial start up costs, they also require specific environmental conditions to be wholly effective, and may be limited to small segments of the population with the interest and the ability to afford such items. As such, energy development needs to continue so these methods of sustainable power and energy can be explored further, and simpler, less expensive and more cost effective methods can be developed to provide people with the power they need in their daily lives.
