Shopping on eBay

What is eBay

eBay is a virtual marketplace where buyers and sellers come together for commercial purposes. Buyers come from all walks of life, and sellers can be traditional purveyors of goods, or they may be individuals looking to sell items for which they no longer have any use. People looking to acquire goods have several options: They can buy a product for the amount requested; they can bid on a product, with a hope of getting it for less; or they can barter in order to make a trade. While all of the options are not available in every instance, EBay is still a good site for on-line shopping for great bargains and hard to find items.

Reliability

Although caveat emptor should govern all transactions, eBay strives to ensure that the products customers buy on-line are as good as the vendor advertises. They have several options regarding returns as well as excellent dispute resolution services.

How to buy on eBay

Buying items on eBay is simple. All products are broken into categories and appropriately cross-referenced. Visitors to the site can shop by category, or can enter terms into the site’s search engine. While the first method is a little slower, it more closely resembles a standard shopping experience as it affords the opportunity to browse through an array of products. The latter is a bit quicker as the search function will go directly to all related products.

Once the desired item is found, the buyer has two choices: Buy it Now or Bid. Buy it Now means that you agree to the price listed, pay for it, and the item is shipped. If you choose to Bid, you enter the highest amount you want to pay. If there is competition for the item, eBay will handle the process up to your designated amount. If you have the best bid, you get the item. This is a little riskier, but the savings may make it worthwhile.

How to pay for items on eBay

eBay is a secure site, so you can rest easy about payment. Once the purchase has been made, it can be paid either by credit card, debit card, or through PayPal. Credit cards offer a little more security because of protection they offer. Debit cards have added protection, and PayPal does as well. You will need to register with eBay and, if you choose PayPal, you will have to set up an account with them.

If problems arise

eBay offers excellent customer service, and works on behalf of the consumer to resolve disputes. Return policies are clearly spelled out. If you have questions, they have a toll-free number to enable you to speak with a courteous and knowledgeable staff.
