One of the essential decisions when choosing a dumpster is what size you choose. Pick something too large and you’re paying for more than you need. Pick one too small and you risk overstuffing or having to order another dumpster, or multiple trips to empty your dumpster. Here are some considerations when choosing a dumpster.

Dumpster Sizes: Basics

Dumpster sizes are measured in cubic yards and can range in size from 8 to 40 cubic yards. Some are sold with garbage compactors or on wheels. Discuss your specific needs with the customer service representative of the dumpster company, who can outfit you with the right model and size of dumpster. Include information such as what your project is, what you intend on dumping and how much of it there is (if known). It may help for the representative to know the square footage of the location you are clearing out, remodeling or demolishing.

Common Dumpster Sizes

Ten-yard dumpsters are commonly sold in dimensions of 12 x 8 x 4 feet and are ideal for small jobs, such as a deck remodel or cleaning out the garage. Twenty-yard dumpsters are commonly sold in dimensions of 22 x 8 x 4.5 feet and are popular choices for clean-up of large garages, a carpet removal project for a large house or shingle removal of the roof of your home. Thirty-yard dumpsters, available in 22 x 8 x 6-foot models, are great for home additions, new home construction, siding replacement or garage demolition. For the big projects, consider a 40-yard dumpster, available in 22 x 8 x 8-foot dimensions. These are especially useful for projects in larger homes, such as siding replacement, or for commercial projects.

Other Considerations

Once dumpster sizes are figured out, make sure you get a detailed quote in writing before accepting services. This includes all fees—hidden and obvious—such as dumpster drop-off, garbage pick-up, extra fees for disposing of special items, and the penalty for keeping the dumpster too long. It’s also a good idea to get in contact with your local government to make sure you’re square on any rules, regulations, licensing and permitting.
