If you are a DSL subscriber you may need to have a DSL router. Think of the router as a gateway for your home networking needs. Basically the router is a small external device that is situated so that it joins networks together. Usually, a router is used when you have multiple computers that are logging on to the Internet using the same network. In general, for a home network you will probably use an internet protocol wired or wireless router.

Using a DSL Router

An internet protocol wired router is a router that requires an Ethernet cable to be plugged into the computer and into the router so that a signal can be exchanged. There are certain advantages of having a wired connection. The main advantage is that you may experience a higher speed of data transmission. A second advantage is that the wired router may provide increased security for your computer.

However, while many people opt to stick with the tried and true wired router, there are others who enjoy the flexibility of having a wireless network. Often times people combine both the wired and the wireless routers in their homes. This provides the stability and security of a wired router with the flexibility of a wireless route

Broadband routers are one option if you are looking for a DSL router. Broadband routers are made to support both DSL and cable modems. The good thing about these routers is that they provide a one stop combination of all of the functions of a DSL modem, a hub and a firewall. These items are integrated for home networks so that the end users have a more user friendly residential gateway for internet use.

A DSL router is quite often referred to as a residential gateway, primarily because more residential clients are end users as opposed to businesses. The term “residential gateway” merely means that the DSL router is a networking device used for home networks that can work as a gateway to better aid residential customers to connect to the Internet. The term itself is a common term in tech speak that refers to multi-functioning network computers used in home residences that use DSL modems as an internet access point.

For more information on getting a DSL router, you can either contact your internet service provider or do an internet search. Additionally, if you do not have DSL for your internet needs, you can contact your local telephone company to find out if DSL service is right for you.
