Average Cost for Dental Procedures

The average cost for dental procedures can vary widely depending on a number of different factors. If you have dental insurance coverage, some or all of the cost may be subsidized by your insurer. In addition, if the dentist is a participating provider with your insurance carrier, your dentist may charge a lower fee than he would charge for someone who is not part of the insurance network, since the insurer may set a limit on the fees he can charge.
While you may be concerned about the cost for dental procedures if you have insurance, since the cost is normally limited to a copay, the question of how much dental insurance procedures cost is usually more important for those paying cash for dental work. Thus, if you are paying cash for dental procedures, you should shop around to find out what the lowest cost for dental procedures will be, and you can consider asking whether the dentist will give you a discount for paying up front or whether he can match the prices he charges the insurance company if you pay cash for the service.
What is the Average Cost for Dental Procedures
The cost for dental procedures also varies depending on where you live and the type of procedure you are having done. Generally, however, the average cost of varying dental procedures is as follows:
- Fillings can cost anywhere from $100 to $300 per area filled. One tooth may require multiple areas to be filled. Fillings are the appropriate treatment for cavities
- Teeth bleaching is usually around $300. This is designed to make your teeth whiter and is considered cosmetic, so must insurance companies will not pay for this procedure.
- A crown, or a cap that goes over the top of your teeth and essentially becomes the new surface of the tooth, can cost between $700 and $1200. Crowns can be ceramic, metal mixtures, or solid gold. The price may vary widely depending on which material you use, with a metal mixture normally being the cheapest
- A dental bridge, which is a set of caps that fit over several teeth, is normally around $2000 to $3000, again depending on the material used.
- Simple tooth extractions to remove wisdom teeth, loose or broken teeth that are visible are around $100- $200 per tooth.
- Surgical tooth extractions, to remove teeth that are not visible above the gum line, such as impacted wisdom teeth, are around $200-$400 per tooth.
