Modern concrete landscaping is a lot more than driveways and sidewalks. Concrete today is used for borders, walls and other landscape adornments – and like the driveways and sidewalks they are quite durable, functional and cost effective.

Many landscape service and design companies specialize in concrete landscaping. The landscape designers at those companies can explain the many benefits of incorporating concrete into your yard.

Uses for concrete landscaping

Perhaps the most popular use of concrete landscaping is for borders. Concrete can be shaped a number of different ways to make attractive borders for gardens or walkways or as way to divide sections of your yard. The concrete borders not only keep the soil in the garden from washing away during storms, they also block grass and weeds from spreading into the garden, making yard maintenance much easier.

In the old days concrete landscaping borders were simply formed concrete. Now, however, homeowners have a wide variety of patterns, shapes and even colors from which to choose. Concrete landscaping borders can be stamped with interesting shapes or designs to make it look like flagstone. It can be smoothed to give off a polished look. Or it can be combined with other materials to give it the appearance of natural stone.

Pavers are another popular form of concrete landscaping and play a big role in many yards and gardens. Concrete pavers, which can be bought in a number of sizes and shapes, are a common material for gardeners to build patios and walkways. The concrete pavers offer great durability at an affordable price. As an added bonus they can be easily moved to other locations when the gardener decides a new landscape design is in order. Concrete pavers can also be pressed and stamped with different textures and patterns to give the concrete the appearance of being made from natural stone.

Concrete is also a favored material for the construction of retaining walls. Retaining walls serve a number of functions. They divide areas of the yard and they keep mud from moving or washing away. Some retaining walls are also built as places for people to sit and enjoy the garden. As with borders, concrete can be stamped or formed in a variety of ways for retaining walls to give it the appearance of natural stone.

But concrete landscaping doesn’t end with walkways, walls or curbing. Concrete is used for many of the items that adorn gardens and yards. Statues, bird baths, fountains and benches all come in concrete.

Many gardeners still think of concrete as nothing more than the material used for streets, driveways and sidewalks, but more and more experts these days are embracing concrete landscaping for its many uses around the yard.
