Commercial tile is commonly used in business and can get dirty, so it is important to understand the different methods of commercial tile cleaning.

Types of Commercial Tile

Tile used in commercial applications comes in four categories: ceramic, porcelain, quarry, and Saltillo.

Ceramic tile is widely used and well-known. It is made of clay and the process of making ceramic tile includes baking it at high temperatures. This makes it very durable, long-lasting, and resistant to chemicals and abrasion. This tile comes in five types: Type 1 is used on walls and light traffic areas. Types 2 and 3 are used in houses in light to moderate traffic areas. Type 4 is put in commercial buildings that see light traffic. Finally, Type 5 is the heavy commercial tile used in high traffic areas such as: shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, etc.

Porcelain tile, as well as ceramic, is made from clay but is made with a dry-press process followed by baking, or firing. It is durable like ceramic tile and used in buildings that have moderate to heavy traffic.

Quarry tile is found in many commercial kitchens and is fired at more than 2000 degrees F. It is a dark red color, is not glazed, and has no pattern. It is great for industrial use because it is both durable and easy to clean.

Saltillo tile, or Mexican tile, looks rougher and less finished than other tile. It is uneven and not perfectly square, can have cracks, and the texture and color varies. They are liked because of these “imperfections”. The tile is fired at lower temperatures for a longer time than other tile and may even be sun baked.

Commercial Tile Cleaning Methods

The first method of cleaning tile is the mop and bucket method. Commercial tile cleaning is different than cleaning the tile in a residence. In industrial settings, the dirt and grease buildup needs to be kept to a minimum. The first step is to sweep thoroughly. Mix the solution of cleaner and hot water and put the cotton string mop into it. After it is saturated, wring the mop with the wringer until is it just wet, but not too drippy. Do about a 10 foot area at one time, flipping the mop as it gets dirty. Repeat the process, changing the water as it starts to look dirty.

The next method is the steam cleaning method. This is gaining popularity as companies try to be more earth friendly. Using steam vapor cuts grease and kills bacteria, mold, and other allergens and pathogens. It is cost effective, as it uses water instead of chemicals, and chemicals are one of the highest costs of tile cleaning. Steam cleaning is efficient and especially good at cleaning grout, since it is under pressure. To summarize, steam cleaning is safe, cheap, easy to use and reliable, needs only water and electricity, cuts grease, kills germs, eliminates allergens, and is earth friendly.

Tile is becoming more popular and cleaning it does not have to be difficult. Of the two main methods of commercial tile cleaning, the steam vapor method is by far the best choice.
