If you are considering an alternative and holistic approach to treating common ailments and feeling better, you may be curious about chiropractic practices. Chiropractors, or doctors of chiropractic, perform a number of services designed to help patients get better. Surprising as it may sound, chiropractic practices do a lot more than just treat back pain- there are a number of other conditions from asthma to headaches or fibryomyalgia that may benefit from chiropractic treatment.

What are Chiropractic Practices?

Chiropractic treatment is based on the premise that the body can heal itself. A chiropractor helps the body to do so by ensuring that there are no subluxations. The spine is the central force of your nervous system and signals from the spine go throughout your body. There are lots of nerves surrounding the spine, and these nerves control pain and sensation throughout the body. As such, chiropractors believe that when there is a misalignment at the spine, it can put pressure on all of these nerves and cause pain and various health problems. A misalignment in the spine is called a subluxation.

Chiropractors thus use various techniques to properly align the spine. Some doctors use gentle manual manipulation, others use tools or adjusting tables to realign the spine. There are many different techniques used, but the main focus is the same- to get all of the bones around the spine back into their proper spot.

Chiropractors also do a number of other things, since they treat the whole patient. A chiropractor may help a patient to come up with a better diet and nutrition plan, to adjust his sleeping habits, to develop an exercise program, to learn to cope with stress, or otherwise to become an overall healthier individual. This, along with achieving proper alignment, is designed to allow the body to heal itself.

Chiropractors attend years of schooling and learn about anatomy, the bones and the body just like medical doctors. However, chiropractic practices are more patient centered and focused on the particular needs of the individual patient. As such, many patients report more success with chiropractic than they do with some conventional medical treatment- however, each situation is different and you should ensure you get expert medical advice and a diagnosis for any pain or problems before attempting to cure them with chiropractic care.

If you are looking for an alternative to conventional medical care and its reliance on pills, surgery and intervention, consider visiting chiropractic practices near you to learn about their healing methodology and to find out if chiropractic can help.
