How to Find a Cheap Locksmith

A cheap locksmith can certainly come in handy because many of the services that locksmiths provide are not inexpensive. Copying a key may not be costly, but what about a car key with an electronic chip? Or how about changing out all the locksets in a home? These are valuable services and just a few of the reasons to be careful about finding a locksmith who can keep costs as reasonable as possible.

  • If you're not a locksmith you may not realize the cost for services. How often do you have a car ignition repaired because a key broke off? What's the cost to install keyless locks with fingerprint technology? These are the kinds of services that individual homeowners may only use infrequently. Because of that, most homeowners often are not familiar with the prices for those and other valuable services offered by locksmiths.
  • Emergency services can be expensive. There is no uniform pricing policy for all locksmiths, so the only way to know what you'll be charged in the event of an emergency is to find out in advance. Some locksmiths charge different rates for after-hours calls and others have trip charges when they have to drive to a location for an emergency service call.

Conduct Interviews to Find a Cheap Locksmith

One of the most important things to do is to search for a locksmith when you don't need any locksmith services. That way you have the time to perform the research. If you wait until an emergency, you're not in much of a position to take the time to find the cheapest locksmith available.

  • Interview locksmiths in person. Get a list of all locksmiths - or 3 to 5 companies - that can provide services at your home or can drive out and help you if you have an emergency. Go to the locksmith's store to get a look at the business.
  • Check credentials. Be sure you check out any locksmith you are considering with the Better Business Bureau. If the BBB has records on the company, they will include information on the number of complaints and ho the company handled those complaints. Also, many states have locksmith associations that can include information on licensing, if required in the state.
