Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), intended for select viewers, refers to a visible or hidden video system. CCTV security is commonly used with home security systems to provide video surveillance and recording so homeowners can play back burglaries in action. CCTV security enables homeowners and police to identify the burglar and reclaim their stolen property. CCTV security ultimately serves as a deterrent against burglary or home invasion because it lets burglars know they are being watched and recorded.

Types of CCTV

There are several different types of CCTV. In-line CCTV is the simplest model and has a monitor or video display mounted directly over the security camera. Out-of-line CCTV has a security camera that uses a television for display. This type of CCTV is not portable like in-line CCTV because it uses a full-size camera and television and works best when used on a desk. The security camera typically sits beside the television. CCTV with a computer monitor is just that: a security camera connected to a computer monitor.

Portable CCTV

Portable CCTV does not require a television, instead uses a display that allows more freedom of use. CCTV security also involves using security cameras, both visible and hidden. Depending on your needs and preferences, each type of security camera serves a different purpose. Visible security cameras can discourage a burglar from choosing your home, making it known that they are being recorded. In contrast, hidden security cameras record illegal activity so homeowners can report information to the police without the burglar realizing they have been compromised. While the two types of security cameras have different purposes, both provide peace of mind for homeowners by enabling them to monitor unauthorized visitors in their home.

Digital Video Recorders

An additional component of CCTV is digital video recorders. They provide the benefit of monitoring and recording burglaries so police can more easily catch burglars, increasing the chance that the homeowners will retrieve stolen items. Most digital video recorders offer various options for offloading video evidence, such as USB, CD-RW, DVD burners, and through a network. Digital video recorders provide the added benefit of enabling homeowners to access their surveillance systems online.

Visible CCTV security cameras allow homeowners to let burglars know they are watching. Hidden CCTV security cameras help police catch burglars undeterred by visible cameras. Together, both types of CCTV security cameras cast a net of video protection around one’s home.
