Currently, there are dozens of cable companies operating within the United States. Of all these providers, five top competitors dominate the vast majority of subscriptions. Learn about the top cable companies in the country and how to choose the right one for you.

Most Popular Cable Companies

Based on total number of subscribers, Comcast is by far the most widely used cable provider in America. Headquartered in Philadelphia, Comcast delivered cable programming to approximately 24 million households in 2008. Comcast's closest competitor is Time Warner Cable. Time Warner currently boasts about 13.3 million subscribers. Comcast's domination of the industry was in part due to the purchase of AT&T Broadband in 2003, which effectively doubled their market share.

Charter Communications, Cox Communications and Cablevision round out the top five cable providers. These three companies service 5.7 million, 6 million and 3.3 million subscribers, respectively.

Choosing a Cable Company

Popularity of a cable company doesn't necessarily mean one service is better than another. In fact, in many cases the cable provider you choose is dictated more by available options than competitive offerings. The majority of areas only have access to one or two providers. As such, choosing a provider begins first by reviewing which companies offer service in your area. Once you understand your options, you can then begin to compare pricing structures and available services.

Some TV customers are worried that limited competition among cable providers in an area results in higher prices. However, these customers are forgetting about satellite TV competition, which serves to help keep costs in check.

Tips for Saving Money on Cable Television

There are many ways for households to save money on cable television. It is not uncommon for cable providers to offer introductory rates to new customers. These rates may result in discounted monthly fees for the first year or more of service. Oftentimes, simply asking for reduced rates or waived fees when talking with a customer service representative may also help lower your monthly bill. When speaking with such representatives, quoting better price structures offered by competitors may help motivate them to give you a discount.
