Tips for Boat Self Storage

Boats constantly face wear and tear when they are in use, but boats can also suffer from damage if they are not stored properly. If you are storing your boat for any length of time, follow these boat self storage tips to keep your boat safe and free from damage while it is stored.
Prevent Boat Self Storage Water Damage
Water damage to pumps and water storage tanks will occur when you store a boat unless you completely drain water from all pipes, pumps and tanks. It is best to follow the owner’s manual when you are preparing for boat self storage – these manuals can show you where water may become trapped and you might need to use an air compressor pump to completely drain the boat.
Rinse and Dry Before Boat Self Storage
Thoroughly rinse and dry your boat before you store it – this is especially important if you are planning on boat self storage right after your boat has been exposed to salt water. Cleaning your boat with fresh water will help to remove salts, bacteria and fungi which can eat away at your boat while it is stored. After you have completely rinsed your boat, make sure it is completely dried – then add a coat of wax and polish to protect your boat’s finish from rust and environmental elements.
Protect the Interior and Exterior of Your Boat
Protect the interior of your boat while it is stored by completely cleaning out your boat. Use a good disinfectant – such as apple vinegar – to wash all floors, cabinets and surfaces.
Remove all loose items in your boat – including cooking items, seat cushions and boat hardware – and store these items separately in a garage or spare room.
Use a quality boat cover that will fit securely over your boat to protect your boat from wear and tear caused by sun, wind, humidity and rain.
Additional Boat Self Storage Considerations
Whether you decide to store your boat on a trailer or up on blocks, make sure your boat is stored on a level surface; storing a boat on an uneven surface can cause mechanical problems in the boat and may even lead to structural damage.
Consult with the manufacturer of the boat as to whether the boat should be stored with the gas tank full or almost empty.
Reduce wear and tear on the engine’s components during boat self storage by flushing the engine with fresh water, replacing all engine fluids and filters and removing the battery.
