The American Board of Surgery (ABS) is anon-profit organization that was founded in 1937. Its purpose it to certify surgeons who have met the necessary educational, training and knowledge requirements. Board surgeons are known as diplomats. The ABS certifies surgeons in the following fields:

Requirements for Board Surgeons

The requirements for board surgeons are very rigid and must be completed exactly as stated:


Applications for board surgeons must be from medical professionals who have graduated from an accredited medical school in the U.S.A. or Canada or they may be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. They must also have fully completed a minimum of five consecutive years of a residency program.


Medical professionals can may an application for certification once they have completed their residency training. Prospective board surgeons must also hold a license to practice medicine in the U.S. Once the application has been approved, the applicant must admit to the certification examination. In order to finally become certified by the ABS, the surgeon must take and pass the written Qualifying Exam and the oral Certifying Examination.
